Yellow, the color of optimism and enthusiasm

I watched The Wizard of Oz every year when I was growing up. One of my favorite parts was when it turned from the sepia tones of the dust bowl to the technicolor grandeur of the magical land of OZ. Dorothy goes from drab to fab in those ruby red slippers skipping down the yellow brick road.

Yellow represents the color of light (like the sun), but also signifies the color of enlightenment and the search to comprehend and see things more clearly. It is the color of curiosity and an inquiring mind. Yellow lovers are highly innovative, imaginative, artistic, and spiritual. These folks are hopeful, optimistic and encourage others to do their best. Yellow people are inclined to see the glass as half full. Yellow can boost our self-esteem, however, as we see with all colors, the shadow side of them can produce the opposite result. The wrong tone or too much yellow can lead to anxiety and nervousness.

I love yellow for its happy optimistic vibe. Gold is my preferred color for shoes and handbags as well as my preferred metal of choice when it comes to jewelry. However, if you look in my closet, yellow is, at best, a third-tier accent color in my clothes. Maybe you are like me, and you don’t think yellow is the best color for you. I tend to think this because the first shade of yellow that pops into my head is not the right yellow for me. When we start to open our minds and think of all the many shades and tints yellow has to offer, like gold, cream, daffodil, mustard, butter, saffron, and ochre we may find one that IS right for us. In fact, you may already be wearing one of those shades and didn’t really think of it as “yellow”.

Next time you want to experiment with yellow, try a pop of it with some accessories. Maybe you could wrap a scarf around your neck or wrist, or even around the handle of your handbag. If you are a silver person, don’t be afraid to mix it up by throwing in some gold and wearing some mixed metals. Gold tone shoes act as a neutral color and go with most everything.

When we start to make intentional decisions with our wardrobe, we start to see a shift in our well-being and our attitudes. Let’s open our minds to the limitless possibilities of color and follow that yellow brick road. You never know, you might just find a yellow that is right for you after all.

XOXO-

Mel
